Heaven Sent Fried Chicken

All this media attention about how Ezell’s Famous Fried Chicken was named the America most life-changing fried chicken by Esquire magazine and the restaurant’s separation from Mr. Ezell Williams himself. I think it’s only fitting I compare the original Ezell’s and the new Heaven Sent fried chicken (started by Mr. Williams).

First impressions of the place. From the menu, the tables, and the colors it looks almost exactly the same as Ezell’s. The quality and taste of the food on the other hand was a little different.

I really love the rolls that comes with the dinner meal. They were sweet like Hawaiian rolls. BBQ Beans were pretty good but not spectacular. Mash potatoes and gravy I really did not like. The gravy had good flavor but the mash had this weird watery consistency. Like it comes from instant mix or something.

As for the chicken I got the 2 piece white with spicy batter. The crust/skin was nice and crunchy but the meat for one of the pieces was a little dry while the other one was nice and juicy. Maybe it was a fluke but there should be better quality control on their food. Overall I thought it was a big “OK.” I guess I would come back if I was really craving some fried chicken and was in the area and but I don’t think I would seek this place out. The damage was $8.30 after tax.

This place really is a Seattle staple.  You cannot come to Seattle and not try a burger at Dick’s.  There probably are better burgers out there but definitely not for under $3 for a burger (i.e. Red Mill).  These guys open late, so this is a great option to grab some grub after having a few beers if you are the Edmonds, Queen Anne, Capitol Hill, Lake City, or Crown Hill areas of Seattle.  But remember all of the Dick’s are drive-in locations with the exception of the one in Queen Anne.

The Deluxe Burger and fries is my normal order here.  This will run you only about $5!  So if you are not lactose intolerant like me go for one of the milkshakes as well.  I have very fond memories of the milkshakes as a kid here.  All three flavors (chocolate, strawberry, and vanilla) are really great addition to any meal you get.

For under $10 you can get a Deluxe Burger, fries, and a milkshake.

My old friend Tubs. As newer sandwich places have come and gone you have always been there serving up some of the most consistently good sandwiches in Seattle. Although I have never had a sandwich I did not like here my two favorites here are the Firecracker and the Godfather. The Firecracker is a jalapeno turkey sandwich served with hot BBQ sauce…yum. The Godfather is a roast beef sandwich like no other I have had before. Along with the roast beef, the sandwich also contains pesto and salami…double yum.

For under $10 you can get a small Firecracker or Godfather and a drink. Don’t let the word “small sandwich” fool you. This should be filling enough for most people. The small is actually the regular/medium sandwich and the small was the mini (before they took the mini away).
