In the final part of my Global Market trilogy I ended up in Taqueria Los Ocampo. These guys are situated right in the middle of the marketplace (right by the large grouping of tables and seats). After quite a bit of deliberating (these guy’s have a massive menu) I ended up ordering the Tlacoyo with pork and a chicken taco on the side for about $6.94 after tax for both. A taco is self explanatory but what the heck is a Tlacoyos? Well, the menu describes it as a masa cake filled with beans and meat topped with veggies. The description cannot capture how good this stuff really is…take a look at the pictures below.
The taco definitely above average and little bit larger than the normal Mexican taco. The Tlacoyo however was way better than the taco…I’ll probably just go for two of them next time. The Tlacoyo has a corn flavor to it (obviously…from the masa dough) along with some crunchy bits of pork inside. Kind of like bacon bits stuffed in a corn pancake. The pork provided some much needed moistness to the masa cake but was at times a little too greasy for my liking. On top of the masa cake was slices of beats, cilantro, onion, and Mexican cheese. I also really like the green sauce (which wasn’t that spicy) but had really good flavor.
Overall, delicious and worth the extra grease in your diet.
